Sewing Graduate Returns to Learn New Digital Skills

Janet is an alumni of Elimu’s Heri Sewing Project. She lives with her two children in a rural village outside Malindi. Her sewing skills and the sewing machine she was given by Elimu are what allow her to provide for her kids, including school fees and uniforms. In 2017, Janet returned to Elimu. When she learned of the new digital fashion design program we run at Elimu Resource Centre, she asked to join. She travels the 90-minute journey to Malindi weekly now to gain computer skills and digital literacy. Along with the other students, she surfs the internet for fashion ideas from around Africa and is improving her English language proficiency and upgrading her business skills. She recently participated in our 2 nd Annual Digital Fashion Show.

Cindy Rodriguez lives in Los Angeles California with her husband Steve and her two children. She is passionate that children have access to quality education. Her career has always focus on children including a strong background in technology edutainment and curriculum development. She began as a teacher and grew into a leadership, Vice Principal role for both elementary and middle schools. She has two MAs in Curriculum and Instruction and Education Leadership. She has an active hand in charity work ranging from assisting Latino students with scholarship foundations to the development of preschools in Darfur/Chad refugee camps. In her free time, she enjoys baking, cooking, travel, running and being an active mom.
